THE HUBBUB OF SILENCE

Due to its visual character, THE HUBBUB OF SILENCE is a work particularly difficult to convey in a photographic form.
THE HUBBUB OF SILENCE is composed of sixteen paintings primed in white. The number of canvasses, their dimensions and presentation correspond to the rule adopted in the other parts of the cycle: those interpreting the hubbub of the beach, the stubble and the city. The canvasses have the same height but differ in width. Their composition - four canvases in four rows along a vertical axis - is meant to be accidental.
In the middle of one of the canvasses, pulsating light flares up every few seconds. The irritating flash does not last long but when it goes out, an after-image remains on the retina of our eyes. Despite the visual silence of the canvasses' neutral whiteness, the after-image still affects our senses. We can feel the hubbub in silence.
